Congestion Pricing in Manhattan to Begin June 30, 2024

Long-Awaited Congestion Pricing Model Set to Make History

Implementation Delayed from April 2024

New York, NY - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced that congestion pricing in Manhattan will begin on June 30, 2024, after a delay from the originally planned start date of April 2024. Congestion pricing is a system that charges drivers a fee for entering a designated zone during peak traffic hours. The goal of the program is to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. The Congestion Relief Zone in Manhattan will include all local streets and avenues at or below 60th Street. Vehicles entering the zone will be tolled for every trip they make, with no daily caps. The tolls will range from $9.50 to $23, depending on the time of day. The implementation of congestion pricing has been delayed several times due to legal challenges and political opposition. However, the MTA has now received all the necessary approvals and is moving forward with the project.

The MTA expects congestion pricing to generate $1 billion in revenue annually, which will be used to fund public transportation projects. The agency also believes that congestion pricing will reduce traffic congestion by up to 20%.
