Overseas UK Voting: Registering to Vote from Abroad

Subheading: Eligibility and Registration Options

As a British citizen living abroad, you are eligible to register to vote in UK general elections regardless of how long you've been living overseas. This is thanks to a new law that came into effect in 2020.

You can register to vote from overseas online or by filling out an electoral registration form. If you choose to register online, you will need to provide your National Insurance number. If you do not have a National Insurance number, you can still register by post, but you will need to provide additional information.

Submitting Your Registration

Once you have completed your registration form, you must sign the declaration and send it to your electoral registration office. You can find the address of your electoral registration office on the Electoral Commission website.

It is important to note that the deadline for registering to vote in a UK general election is 11:59pm on the 12th day before polling day. If you miss this deadline, you will not be able to vote in the election.

Voting as a Proxy

If you are unable to vote in person, you can appoint someone to vote on your behalf as a proxy. This person must be registered to vote in the same constituency as you.

To appoint a proxy, you will need to complete a proxy form. You can download a proxy form from the Electoral Commission website. Once you have completed the form, you must send it to your electoral registration office.
